PE for Grades Kindergarten through 3rd

  • Following the leader around the block or in your yard using your locomotor skills: walk, run, hop on 1 foot, jump using both feet, skip, gallop (traveling with 1 foot always in the lead), side-slide, leap, crab walk, roll like a log (straight arms/legs)
  • Hula hoop skills – around waist, neck, arm; rolling, jumping through, etc.
  • Bean bag tossing to self or with a partner or into a bucket or hoola hoop
  • Throwing and catching with balls underhand/overhand, hit a target; frisbee practice
  • Non locomotor movements: balance on 1foot, stretch, pull, bend, turn, sway, swing, curl
  • Simon Says mimicking animals/sports movements, altering size & speed of motion
  • Bouncing ball & shooting baskets; striking with foot around cones/markers/chalk lines
  • Scarf tag (or use long socks) with family or other tagging game; practice side slide
  • Rock paper scissor hula hoops, alternate with jumping, hopping, leaping, running
  • Ankle skip ball hoppers (they are on Amazon – very popular item at PE)
  • Jump rope – single and double
  • Ride your bike or roller skate
  • Freeze dance party
  • Make a hopscotch with chalk and play
  • Pin knock out can even be played with 4 people. Can use rolled socks/water bottles
  • Steal the bacon (opposite sides race to object in middle. Player who reaches object 1st must race to return to own side without being tagged by other player who did not reach object 1st)
  • Family Relays – running or using locomotor skills above
  • For those up to the challenge, explore some of the upper grades activities

PE for Grades 4th through 8th

  • Continue to run/walk the mile (6th through 8thgrade) or half mile (4th & 5th) in your neighborhood at least once a week, preferably twice. Time it to see how you are progressing.
  • Fitness workouts. There are so many free apps that have Quick 7 minute workouts that you can find. Each one has various routines that focus on different parts of body/strength/cardio segments. My family and I like the Peleton App fitness/yoga classes. Right now, it is free to download by April 30th and no charge for 90 days. You can cancel right before that time ends. Below you will also find some YouTube links that you may enjoy.
  • Volleyball passing to self, against exterior house wall or with a partner.
  • Basketball dribbling and shooting. Play a pick-up game or shooting game if you have a larger family. By yourself, play around the world to see how accurate you can be with your shots.
  • Soccer skills. Make a goal and obstacle cones to dribble around/practice control.
  • Frisbee toss practice. Try to play frisbee golf or ultimate frisbee if you have a big family.
  • Jumping rope. I have attached a ninja jump rope challenge sheet below.
  • Yoga – there are many Apps out there with great beginners classes including the Peleton App I mentioned above.
  • Warm up and cool down stretches are always important. Focus on your areas of tightness like we do in PE Class. Look up different stretches so that you can lead stretches at SMA when we are all back together. Here is a list of some you can start with:
    • Big Arm Circles forward and backward
    • Cross over arm stretch and behind/overhead (sponge bob/squidward)
    • Side Twist
    • Calf/shin stretch (standing/hands on wall/alternate foot forward & back)
    • Flamingo (quad stretch)
    • Side lunge with wide legs (groin stretch)
    • Cherry Pickers (wide legs/touch the ground)
    • Butterfly (on ground, bend knees, soles of feet together)
    • Movie Stars (sit, 1 knee bent, twist to look over that same knee)
  • Deck of Cards One minute challenge. (This is similar to our fitness dice we rolled as a group). Randomly draw 7-10 cards from deck of playing cards and then perform each challenge for 1 minute according to following list. If you draw a
    • 2: burpees,
    • 3: crunches,
    • 4: imaginary jump roping (or use a real one),
    • 5: squats,
    • 6: wall sit or dips using a chair or low wall,
    • 7: forearm plank,
    • 8: lunges (switching leg at 30 seconds),
    • 9: bicycle crunches,
    • 10: push-ups (can use knees),
    • Jack: jumping jacks,
    • Queen: high knees running in place,
    • King: mountain climbers,
    • Ace: Water break 😉 or if you want a challenge: shuffle squats (2 shuffles sideways/squat).

If you live in an area where you can roller skate or ride your bike, take advantage! Reference pages at the end of this letter for more activities. Here are some YouTube links that offer fitness training:
