Protocols for Health and Safety of Students & Staff
• The school has purchased no-touch thermal scan thermometers for symptom screenings for
every classroom and the school office.
• The school has purchased disposable masks in the event a student needs a replacement.
• The school maintains sufficient supplies of hand sanitizers, soap, tissues, no-touch trash cans, and paper towels for use by students and staff. Faucets and soap dispensers require no-touch operation.
• The school has available sufficient cleaning supplies to continuously disinfect the school site in accordance with CDPH guidance and to meet high cleanliness standards by using those products approved for use against COVID-19 on the Environmental Protection Agency Approved List “N”.
• Disinfecting products used are those approved for targeting COVID-19 as per the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with application in a safe and correct manner using personal protective equipment and ventilation.
• Routine cleaning procedures will be reviewed and revised accordingly to include sanitization of classrooms on a daily basis at the close of the school day.
• Classroom procedures and supplies are in place to allow teachers and staff to clean frequently touched surfaces such as, but not limited to, desktops, chairs, tables, light switches, and doorknobs multiple times per day.
• Procedures and supplies are in place to allow staff to clean common areas of the school, including electronic equipment.
• High-touch surfaces are to be disinfected frequently and between uses (door handles, handrails, sink handles, restroom surfaces).
• Outdoor air circulation will be incorporated as much as possible. In accordance with CDC guidelines, ventilation systems and fans will be checked and increased circulation of outdoor air will be facilitated as much as possible by opening windows and doors.
• Sharing of electronic devices, school supplies, books, and other learning aids will be limited to the extent practicable.
• Each student’s belongings and supplies will be kept separate.
• Any area used by a sick person will be closed off for as close to 24 hours as possible before being cleaned and disinfected.
Educating Students and Staff on Disease Prevention Behaviors
• All staff will be trained and will educate students on the following safety actions:
Cough and Sneeze etiquette
Frequent and effective hand washing
Scrub with soap for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not
accessible. Use paper towels to dry hands thoroughly. Wash hands when arriving and leaving home, arriving at and leaving school, after playing outside, after close contact with others, after using shared surfaces or tools, before and after using the restroom, after blowing nose, coughing, and sneezing, and before and after eating prepared foods.
Not touching one’s face, eyes or mouth or face covering
Not sharing food, drinks, or utensils
Staying home when ill
Avoiding contact with people who are sick
Refraining from hugs and handshakes
Proper use, removal, and washing of Personal Protective Equipment – cloth face coverings

Hygiene and Preventative Measures
• Temperature screening will be conducted for each student and staff before and/or upon arriving on campus using a no-touch thermometer. Individuals will be asked screening questions about the presence of COVID-19 symptoms (such as cough, shortness of breath, congestion) and whether anyone in their home has COVID-19 symptoms or has tested positive for it.
• Signage will be posted on campus and in classrooms to educate students, staff, and visitors on signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and proper hygiene etiquette for preventing it’s occurrence.
• Teachers will review proper hygiene and preventative measures frequently with students.
• Students and staff will wear face coverings when entering and exiting school grounds. Face
shields may be an alternative if a student can’t wear a mask. Requiring a mask while in the
classroom is being discussed at the Diocesan level.
• Training and information will be provided to students and staff on proper use, removal, and
washing of face coverings, including not touching face or face covering.
• Opportunities for frequent hand washing will be provided.
• Access to hand washing and sanitizer stations will be ensured.
• Students will be advised to use tissues to wipe their nose; cough and sneeze into tissues; sanitize hands after using tissues.
• Movement of students, teachers, and staff between classrooms will be minimized as much as possible.
• School start and end times will be staggered so as to maintain safe distancing.

• Barriers, signage, and markers will be employed to help direct movement in and around campus.
• Lunch time play, physical education and athletics will be limited to activities that do not involve physical contact or equipment until advised otherwise by public health officials.
• Field trips, inter-class activities, and extracurricular activities will be eliminated for the time being.
• Students will be accommodated in classrooms meeting current minimum physical distancing guidelines from the CDC.
• Desks will be a minimum of 6 feet apart and arranged in such a way as to minimize
• Other campus spaces will be utilized for instructional activities if necessary to maintain
appropriate distancing guidelines.
• Students will remain in the same space with the same teacher/staff to the greatest extent
• Privacy boards or clear screens may be incorporated as deemed necessary.
• Outside food service will be suspended.
• Students will eat lunch in staggered schedules two classes at a time. One class will be seated at the lunch tables with 6 feet distance between students and one class will eat outside their classroom with 6 feet distance between students.
• Tables will be cleaned between class lunches and trash will be removed by the custodian.
• Staff will be physically distanced from each other at all times and will avoid congregating in
staff rooms and other work environments.
• Work spaces will be reconfigured to maintain physical distancing between staff and students
and between staff and visitors. Access to the school office will be limited to one person or one
family at a time.
• There will be minimal access to campus by visitors and volunteers at this time. Family members
will be directed to tables outside the school gates for dropping off/picking up items.
• Access to the school office will be limited to one person or one family at a time, following social distancing markers.
• Families will be encouraged to use FACTS to deduct any incidental expenses such as school
folders, sweatshirts, etc. in order to minimize visits to school grounds.
Plan for the Potential Presence of COVID-19 Signs and Symptoms
• Reference CDC guidelines:
• For the health and safety of the St. Martin Academy community it is imperative that families keep their child(ren) home from school when they present any symptoms associated with COVID-19 such as the following: fever of 100F or more; chills; new cough, nasal congestion, or runny nose; shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; new muscle or body aches or fatigue; headache (if abnormal); new loss of taste or smell; sore throat; nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain; diarrhea; new rash.
• If student/staff has a fever, cough or other symptoms, it might be COVID-19. Most people have mild illness and are able to recover at home. If there has been possible exposure to COVID-19, contact a healthcare provider. Keep track of your symptoms. If experiencing an emergency warning sign (including trouble breathing), get emergency medical care immediately.
• Steps to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 while sick:
Stay home. Most people with COVID-19 have mild illness and can recover at home without medical care. Do not leave your home, except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas.
Take care of yourself. Get rest and stay hydrated. Take over-the-counter medicines, such as acetaminophen, to help you feel better.
Stay in touch with your doctor. Call before you get medical care. Be sure to get care if you have trouble breathing, or have any other emergency warning signs, or if you think it is an emergency.
• If a staff member/student develops symptoms of illness while at school, he/she will be separated from others right away, will be required to keep on a face mask, and will be kept in supervised isolation until picked up by an authorized adult. Symptoms include: fever, cough, shortness of
breath or difficulty breathing, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell. Areas of the school where the individual visited will be closed temporarily and sanitized.
• If staff/student contracts COVID-19 the school should be notified; the school will contact the local public health officials and follow their guidance regarding school closure which could likely be for at least three days.
Given the standard guidance of isolation at home for at least 14 days after close contact with an individual with COVID-19, the classroom where the student/staff was based will need to close temporarily as students or staff isolate.
• If student/staff has COVID-19 (or thinks has COVID-19) the requirements for returning to school are as follows:
3 days with no fever and
Symptoms improved and
10 days since symptoms first appeared
Depending on the healthcare provider’s advice and availability of testing, staff/student may be tested to see if has COVID-19. If tested, staff/student may return to school when there is no fever, symptoms have improved, and staff/student receives two negative test results in a row, at least 24 hours apart.
• If staff/student tests positive for COVID-19 but has no symptoms he/she may return to school when 10 days have passed since being tested and two tests in a row are negative, at least 24 hours apart.
• Any staff/student who has close contact with someone with COVID-19 should stay home for
14 days after exposure based on the time it takes to develop illness.
• The school community will be notified immediately of any possible cases of COVID-19 via any of the school communication systems (i.e., email, school-wide broadcast system) while maintaining confidentiality as required by state and federal law.
• In the event of a partial or full school closure, students will be provided support in the form of online learning and/or independent study.
