As many of you know by now, on October 27th, my husband suddenly passed away in his sleep. John had been living with pain for at least 20 years, and I believe his heart just couldn’t take it anymore. For this reason, I know he is finally resting in peace with our God. I find comfort in that thought.
Many of you are probably wondering how I am doing. Most of the time I am fine, because I keep busy. Most of the time I am fine, because I am surrounded by people like you who offer me kind words of support, or give me a smile that says “I feel your pain”, or what I especially love, is when someone gives me a great, big hug. I am also fortunate to have a wonderful family who will always be there for me. I am blessed.
I have said repeatedly that I am blessed twice. I have a school community that is my family as well – my teachers and staff, students and parents. I want to thank all of you for your love, support and prayers. Thank you for the cards and the donations to tuition assistance made in memory of my husband. Thank you to everyone who helped in the celebration of John’s funeral Mass, especially to my staff and the moms who made the reception that followed possible. It was all beautiful and perfect. Finally, I want to thank the School Board who initiated a memorial fund in John’s name at the Great Cash Giveaway and all those at the event who donated a total of $5170. This money will be used to purchase student science tables and a teacher demonstration table for the conversion of the 7th grade room into a science lab/classroom.
With much appreciation and gratitude,
Steam Maker Festival this Saturday
Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics
St. Martin Academy will be participating in the San Diego STEAM Maker Festival Saturday, Dec. 2nd at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. SMA has 16 students in teams of four competing at the event this weekend. Each team was given a scientific instrument to research the scientific principles behind its operation. Their presentation must include not only these principles but their importance in the history of science. This is the first year the Diocese is participating and we look forward to a fun, exciting and educational event.
The festival brings together students, educators, schools, clubs, SteamMaker, and industry to demonstrate and showcase available tools and resources to enrich STEAM education.
A limited number of free tickets are available in the school office for adults and students. Call the office if you would like to attend. We thank Maria Chavez for providing some of these tickets! Call or email the school and they will be sent home with your child.
Advent Program: “Carriers of the Light” -Thursday, December 21 @ 6:30 p.m. (church)
The students will be participating in a program of Christmas songs with narration from Scripture. This event is not mandatory but an event that we hope you may be able to attend and enjoy! This is a very busy month and we realize that families may have other engagements this evening. What is mandatory is appropriate attire for this program, which should be dressy, including shoes. Guidelines must be followed from the SMA Handbook. Dresses need to be modest, no higher than 2 inches above the knee, no bare shoulders or spaghetti straps. Light make-up for girls in grades 7 & 8 only. Boys should have collared shirts and dress pants. No “sports” tennis shoes. Any student not dressed appropriately will not be allowed to participate in the program.
A dress rehearsal is Wed. Dec. 20 at 1pm in the church if grandparents/relatives or parents would like to attend. Only the Academy will be rehearsing; preschool will not be there.
