Parent Newsletter • May 3, 2018

Dear Parents,

Grandparents’ Day is fast approaching! We invite parents to come on Thursday, May 10th to preview the entertainment that each of the classes (K-8) perform for the grandparents. (1:15pm – parish hall) This rehearsal is for students at the Academy only. The preschool will not be attending this rehearsal. We also invite parents to attend Mass next Friday at 8:30am. The rest of the day is for the grandparents as they visit the classrooms and enjoy the food stations set up around the school. For those grandparents who have difficulties getting around, a parent may assist at the school and escort them to the hall only. We will have a golf cart to help transport grandparents to the hall. Last year over 350 grandparents attended and every space available is reserved for them! Please call the school if you will be assisting a grandparent. The upper parking lot will be designated for grandparents who are handicapped or have difficulty walking up or down stairs. Please note: dismissal for all is at 11:30am for the Academy and Preschool. FYI: Day care will not be open after dismissal on Grandparents’ Day.

Last week myself, Diane Hartley & Anne Pacheco represented our school at the La Mesa Business Spring Expo sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. SMA tabled with 47 other businesses & organizations. We renewed connections with friends of St. Martin’s, business partners & even alums! It was an excellent networking opportunity for us.

Save the date for our end-of-year open house on May 24, hosted by the 5th grade room parents. The dinner and evening promises to be a very enjoyable community event.

We hope to see you there! See the flyer enclosed.

On Tuesday, May 29th we will have a “Yearbook” assembly at 1:30pm. Those who purchased a yearbook in grades K-5 will receive the books that day and have the opportunity to have classmates autograph their books with their name. Those students will be instructed to take their books home that day. Students in grades 6-8 will also receive their yearbooks and have the opportunity to have fellow classmates autograph their books. They will be allowed to bring the books back to school. We have ordered only 200 books. We will be taking orders until we run out of the yearbooks. These are hardcover, color yearbooks featuring all the grades & events at SMA. This book will last a lifetime!

SLE Assessments/Presentations by 8th Grade

The week of May 15th, our 8th grade students will be presenting an oral report and power point to the shareholders of the school community at lunchtime in the library. We invite you to attend! More information about our Student Learning Expectations (SLE’s) will be in next week’s newsletter.

Alum of the Month

For the month of May we feature Jessica Cavanaugh from the Class of 2001! After graduating from SMA, Jessica attended the Academy of Our Lady of Peace & UCSD. Jessica is the daughter of Frances who is the 9am Sunday Mass choir director. She is proud to continue her family’s legacy at the SD Police Department. Read all she has to share online at:

Project Based Learning

In conjunction with an art class unit on Architecture, eighth grade students learned about renowned San Diego Architect William Templeton Johnson, who designed the Museum of Art, as well as the Natural History Museum on a field trip last week.

Recently, the 6th Graders visited the Museum of Man in Balboa Park. They participated in a guided tour of the Egyptian exhibit, where they engaged in a lively and fascinating discourse about Ancient Egyptian civilization and culture. The exhibit, which is considered to be one of the most valuable collections in the United States, showcases over 400 objects from the Egyptian Exploration Society, including hieroglyphic stone carvings, ancient pottery, mummified falcons, and a Ptolemic coffin. The tour and workshop was a valuable and enriching field experience in which the students reflected on the importance of such well-documented and consequential history, especially as it pertains to their own exploration of our 6th grade social studies and language arts curriculum.
