Academy Mass – Sunday at 11AM!

We ask SMA families to attend the 11am Mass this Sunday. Academy staff, students and parents will be participating in all aspects of the Mass. Please invite family and friends to attend. We are working hard to promote our school and parish in our community.

Renaissance/Star Testing

This week we began our final testing period using the Renaissance STAR assessment (grs. 2-8). This adaptive assessment gives our teachers exact, real-time data on the ability level of students in both reading and math. This assessment is nationally normed and provides comparison data on a national scale. Your student’s profile will continue to grow and build on the results from this year. Testing will continue through May 4th. Results will be in your parent envelope at the end of May.

Project Based Learning

7th grade students built 3-D models of Roman and Greek Architecture as part of their Ancient Rome and Greece Unit in Social Studies. Just a few are pictured here, but all projects were very creative and well done!

On Wednesday April 25th the 7th Grade class participated in a community learning trip to the Birch Aquarium on the campus of UCSD. The first part of the day was spent learning about the different marine ecosystems and the animals that inhabit them. The students completed a learning activity and then spent time interacting with marine organisms in the tide pool exhibit. After lunch outside in the shade of Torrey pines the students then participated in a lab conducted by aquarium staff. The lab dealt with the anatomy of the Pacific market squid. The students learned about the unique anatomical adaptations of the squid for survival in the ocean environment. For many this was the first they had conducted a dissection lab. It was a very exciting and educational day that hopefully has inspired our 7th graders time to pursue more educational opportunities in the biological sciences.

Thank you to all who contributed to the CRS Rice Bowl program. The school donations came to $990.38. Thank you to the fifth grade class and Nan Soto who led the program. Through CRS Rice Bowl, we shared the journey with members of our human family around the world, and committed our Lenten prayers, fasting and almsgiving to deepening our faith and serving those in need.

Mr. Santos (father to Angelina & Jayden) spoke about patriotism to the first grade class this week.
