The Moran family of ten headed west from Colorado to San Diego in 1965. I went to St. Vincent de Paul for the 1st grade and completed 2-8 at St. Martin’s. I shared my education with my Irish twin, Mike Moran. We walked to and from school every day, one mile each way from the Village of La Mesa where my dear mother, Patricia still resides. These daily walks helped build up my endurance for later in life.
Due to the sacrifices my parents made, I was blessed with an extraordinary education at St. Martin’s. The nuns/teachers instilled the values of discipline, respect and love of God that has been the spiritual bedrock of my adult life.
I was taught to work hard and remain joyful in my service to others. My motto is “I love what I do and I do what I love”. My father founded the Moan Insurance Agency in 1965 and I took over on 2009, the year he passed after a long battle with cancer. In 2006, I obtained my real estate broker’s license providing real estate services as well. I tell my generations of clients that they helped to raise eight children and over thirty grand and great grandchildren! Their continued loyalty is appreciated!
For active relaxation, I engage in endurance events. I have completed in well over 50 marathons and ultra-marathons since I turned 40 years old, my favorite being trail races of 50K, 50 miles & 100 miles. I have completed the Badwater 135 mile ultra. It begins in Death Valley and ends at the Portals of Mt. Whitney. The event is held in July each year. In 2005 the temps reached 123 degrees! This was one of the toughest things I have ever done! I have fastpacked the John Muir Trail in 9 days from south to north with undiagnosed asthma! And, my local claim to fame is completing 17 repeats (up & down) of Cowles Mtn. in 18.5 hours.
As I approach age 60, I have slowed down my activity, enjoying hiking at a slower pace. My last event was hiking 60 miles in 20 hours in March 2018 at Lake Cuyamaca. Today it is not as much about the actual event as it is the journey and the people along the way.
I also love to travel and have been to Europe a few times and Peru once. One trip included Fr. Jim Poulsen whereby he rode his bike into a canal in the Netherlands! Please note I was not responsible for his injuries or for treating this ride as the Tour de Netherlands!
To give back what was so freely given to me, I serve on the Finance Council, and volunteer at the Knights of Columbus events. I also serve outside my faith community as a member/volunteer for the San Diego Turtle & Tortoise Society and SURF San Diego Ultra Running Friends.
Most of all, I am grateful for the people that have been placed in my life that have made me the person I am today. I remain a blessed and joyful Child of God.
