Grade Level Curriculum Guidelines

St. Martin of Tours Academy, in partnership with parents, is a Catholic parish elementary school that prepares students to be lifelong learners through a curriculum that has a strong moral, spiritual, and academic foundation. Students understand the need for peace and justice, and as responsible Catholics, are challenged to answer the call to service and become engaged citizens of the world.

SACRAMENTS

  • Study of the Signs of Faith
  • The Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Reconciliation, Anointing of Sick, Matrimony, and Holy Orders

SCRIPTURE

  •  Study of the Old Testament: Creation, Sin and God’s Promise
  • The Covenant of Sinai, Freedom Covenant, Covenant of the World
  • Mysteries of evil
  • The Holy Land and The Promised Land, the coming of Jesus, the Catholic Church
  • Study of Holy Days, Saints and the Pope

LITURGY/PRAYER

  • Observance and celebration of Holy Days of Lent
  • Participation in programs of alter serving, church choir
  • Students actively participate in liturgical celebrations, weekly masses, readings, petitions and prayers, prayer        gatherings and daily prayers or petitions are shared

SOCIAL JUSTICE

  • Students raise money for the Holy Childhood Campaign
  • Students write letters to others who are home bound in the parish
  • Students participate in the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl Lent Program & Give of Hope Advent Program

READING

Word Analysis, Fluency, and Vocabulary Development:

  • Distinguishes and interprets written text
  • Recognizes word origins and meanings using grade appropriate Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues
  • Uses context as clue to the meaning of a word or phrase

READING COMPREHENSION

  • Identifies the central idea and assesses detailed evidence that supports and conveys the idea
  • Clarifies meaning and summaries written text
  • Makes predictions, draws inferences, conclusions about a text based on supporting details and evidence
  • Determines an author’s point of view and purpose and identifies how it is developed in the text

STUDY AND REFERENCE SKILLS

  •  Reads and references factual information from maps, charts, graphs, time lines, journals and on-line publications to substantiate written content
  • Uses a variety of informational sources such as dictionaries, atlas, almanacs, encyclopedias, newspapers,
    periodicals, and digital media

WRITING

  • Composes multi-paragraph compositions which have a clear purpose, introduction, supportive details and effective conclusion
  • Utilizes properly formatted bibliography and citation
  • Analyzes, revises, edits and clarifies written work
  • Utilizes pre-writing, planning, drafting, revising and editing steps of the writing process in extended writing projects such as the composition of narrative, informative, explanatory and persuasive essays
  • Uses precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to  inform about a topic or idea
  • Writes cohesive arguments and support assertions with relevant evidence

LISTENING AND SPEAKING

  • Interprets auditory and verbal instruction
  • Delivers a variety of concise presentations which uses effective volume, rate and tone with interesting             information to keep the audience’s attention
  • Engages in critical and constructive discussion

NUMBER SENSE

  • Compares, orders, interprets and solves problems using fractions, ratios, proportions, and percentages
  • Calculates and solves problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Determines the least common multiple and greatest common divisor
  • Uses estimation strategies for all operations

ALGEBRA AND FUNCTIONS

  • Writes, evaluates, analyzes and solves verbal expressions in sentences as algebraic expressions and             equations
  • Solves problems using correct order of operations

MEASUREMENT AND GEOMETRY

  • Understands the measurement of plane and solid shapes
  • Knows the formula of the circumference and area
  • Identifies the properties of two dimensional shapes
  • Understands the concept of a constant number like pi

STATISTICS, DATA ANALYSIS, AND PROBABILITY

  • Computes and analyzes statistical measurement for data sets
  • Computes the range, mean, median, and mode of data sets
  • Represents probabilities as ratios, proportions and decimals between 0 and 1

MATHEMATICAL REASONING

  • Makes decisions about how to approach a problem, set up an equation, and solve an equation
  • Makes precise calculations and checks the reasonability or validity of answers

PHYSICAL SCIENCE

  • Understands the basic explanations for the important features of the lands surface
  • Identifies heat and energy flow through convection, conduction and radiation currents

EARTH SCIENCE

  •  Understands the effect of the ecology of the earth and their responsibly to protect the earth
  • Understands topography and how landscape is shaped
  • Recognizes major geologic events, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and mountain building, result from plate motions
  • Understands the transfer of earths energy and results in weather changes

INVESTIGATION AND EXPERIMENTATION

  • Hypothesizes, classifies, and interprets data found from investigation and discovery experiments
  • Draws conclusions using study information based on scientific information
  • Compares, analyzes and synthesizes data results using metacognitive skills and scientific fact

HISTORY

  • Traces roots of early humankind, Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic ages
  • Discovers the early middle eastern civilizations and ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Japan,  Greece and Rome
  • Understands the strength and vastness of the Roman Empire

GEOGRAPHY

  • Traces and locates the migration and expansion of ancient civilization
  • Explains how geography affected ancient civilizations
  • Identifies the importance of geography as a contributing factor to the human story

ECONOMICS

  • Recognizes the significance of power, vastness and region in the economies of early civilizations
  • Understands the connection between social organization and waterways in the success of an economy

CULTURE

  •  Sees the USA as a pluralistic society
  • Studies life as an explorer
  • Understands life at the dawn of the Revolutionary War
  • Increases touch type 35 words per minute with 80% accuracy
  • Understands computer-related terminology and how computer function
  • Understands the basics of keyboard memory
  • Can successful compile a written piece using a computer program including paragraphs, biography and Excel
  • Discusses copyright laws involving computer and websites and giving credit to authors of electronic works
  • Recognize parts of a spreadsheet, moving among cells, and formatting cells, making a graph in a spreadsheet
  • Can successfully compile a written piece using a computer program

EXERCISE AND CALISTHENICS AND SPORT SKILLS

  • Plays organized agility games exercising Christian sportsmanship
  • Acquires knowledge to build responsible decision making, healthy lifestyles, and general wellness.
  • Participates in team sports to develop tolerance of others and cooperative skills.
  • Understands and utilizes rules for organized sports like: Basketball, football, baseball, soccer, track and volleyball

VISUAL AND TACTILE PERCEPTION

  • Uses shading for drawing for depth and proportion, contours of land, line technique and color development
  • Use of the color wheel and color theory and visual arts heritage
  • Understands design concepts of texture, balance, repetition

CREATIVE EXPRESSION

  • Demonstrates ability to work with a variety of crafts/media: printing, clay, papier-mache, weaving, collage, mosaics
  • Demonstrates ability to draw still life; exhibit individual art work, critique works of art from various cultural and historical contexts.

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

  • Appreciates art work, uses design elements, art media and processes, understanding artistic mood and style
